Rago '05 opines on Venkatesan scandal in WSJ

The Opinion section of today's Wall Street Journal features an excellent piece by former Review editor-in-chief Joseph Rago '05. A choice excerpt:
I once wrote a term paper for a lit-crit course where I "deconstructed" the MTV program "Pimp My Ride." A typical passage: "Each episode is a text of inescapable complexity . . . Our received notions of what constitutes a ride are constantly subverted and undermined." It received an A.

Mocking deconstruction? Now that's postmodern.

I like it when the Journal picks on mentally ill people...

But it's cheaper than running an ad.

Rago's always been a good writer.

It's a great credit to him that, despite his biases, he was able to appreciate Pimp My Ride in all its complexity. Most people watch that show and think that it's just about accessorizing a car for free, to the delight of a young person and to the free advertising benefit of the accessorizers. That the show challenges the very nature of what constitutes a ride is an insight that few are able to grasp.

FYI off subject

I just got my Dartmouth Undying mailer in the US Mail today from student leadership:

about 5% of each class signed letter and first page listed names along with affiliation, title:

Name, Varsity Volleyball Co-Captain, 11

etc.

You know and I know that's she's just a mentally ill person, of course the WSJ needs to make her out to be just another awful liberal educator.

What a cheap, cheap shot.

Thousands and thousands of excellent educators teaching right now and the WSJ uses this person for their Reich-wing propaganda.

It's slowly starting to look like she's mentally ill, but that's not clearly established yet.

She may be mentally ill and another awful liberal educator, and Rago's attacking mostly the latter, which seems like fair game to me.

Also, the fact that the liberal educators at Dartmouth would hire this woman is significant.

"Also, the fact that the liberal educators at Dartmouth would hire this woman is significant."

She obviously flys under the radar as so many funtional, mentaly ill people do.

The only "significane" for the right is that "liberals" are presumed to be involved.

I'm sure that there have never been truly outstanding people hired by liberals as we know that liberals are evil and can do no good.

I'm sure "conservatives" were involved in hiring at Oral Roberts U, but you don't hear much of that do you?

"significance"

Republican Family Values:
Apathy, Callousness, Greed, Self Serving Self Interest,
Narcissism, Inhumanity, Death, Looting, Plundering.

To the last commenter, dailykos.com is such an easy-to-remember web address that there's really no excuse for forgetting it and posting here instead.

Really? I'm sure that's wrong. There are plenty of outstanding professors at Dartmouth, many of whom were presumably hired by liberals.
