Wednesday, April 30, 2008Stop the Presses: The Dartmouth Review Mistreats Minorities"It goes without saying that a lot of underrepresented groups feel mistreated here, whether it’s by the Greek system, The Dartmouth Review or just the people they engage with on a daily basis."Jordan Osserman '11's editorial in the D today about the necessity of choosing a female, non-heterosexual, or minority President is truly a treasure. In addition to the above quote, it yielded such gems as: "And as the Board of Trustees continues its search for the next leader of the Big Green, it’s time we set a new requirement: straight white men need not apply." Posted by Christine S. Tian at 1:19 PM Comments This is just ridiculous. She makes terrible arguments for why "straight, white men" should not be included in the presidential search, aside from the ludicrous idea itself. Posted by — April 30, 2008 1:49 PM It's a he, btw. Posted by — April 30, 2008 1:51 PM How could it be? Only a woman would make such a dumb argument. Posted by — April 30, 2008 1:55 PM Women, African-Americans, homosexuals, etc. have been marginalized for too long. Obviously the only way to correct for this is to marginalize straight white men for a while. Posted by — April 30, 2008 2:00 PM Osserman also asserts that all straight white men were born into a position of "pure privilege". Does that mean that a straight white man who came from an impoverished background, is in a wheelchair, had an abusive father, etc. would be unable to commiserate with the downtrodden? Must a president fit into only the disadvantaged groups that Osserman cares about? Posted by W. Aubin — April 30, 2008 2:33 PM I love how the editor of The Dartmouth Review is a minority female who, according to Osserman, "mistreats minorities"... but shouldn't "a representative of a marginalized group... who is female, gay, non-white or all of the above" have "an inherent understanding of the struggles of women and minorities?"
