AoA condemns Board's expansion

The Association of Alumni’s executive committee, which represents the 68,000 living Dartmouth alums, has come out against the Governance Committee's decision overhaul the 116 year precedent of parity on the Board of Trustees. As Chairman of the Board Ed Haldeman declared several days ago, the Board will expand its membership from 16 to 24 trustees by adding 8 charter trustees. That makes 8 competitively elected trustees and 16 appointed trustees. We still await word from the AoA about its official course of action in light of the Board’s violation of the 1891 agreement.

Also, the Board’s expansion is receiving national press with this piece in today’s New York Times.

I support these guys, but c'mon: "A more expansive response, including our proximate course of action, will be issued after we have had more time to digest and deliberate the full implications of the trustee decision."

It took them more than a day to come up with this? Weak-kneed and poorly written to boot. We flippin' knew the AoA wouldn't like the Board's decision! Couldn't the statement have had at least some punch, pizazz, and leadership? The only thing that makes it a better release than the Board's is that it's shorter.

Amateur night in Hanover, on both sides so far.

Look at the bright side: Maybe 8 out of 26 seats will be better than 4 out of 18. And maybe we can get a Dartmouth alum to run for governor. And maybe Wright isn't immortal.

Yo, it's spelled "Amateur Nite."

And the Association's own president doesn't even agree with the thing. Or a lot of its executives (slightly fewer than half, in fact).

Does the Association have any officers other than Dreisengado? That David Gale fellow, I guess.
