Wednesday, June 25, 2003Wright's selective memoryIn response to Rollo's post: Wright *must* be referring to our school's founding for the benefit of New Hampshire's natives. Of course, whenever the Indian mascot is brought up, everybody says that's a "myth," that the school was founded to Christianize and control the hapless Indians--and there's a lot of hand-wringing about Dartmouth's secret shame. Which is it gonna be, Wright?Myth or no myth, I'm leaning toward the "diversity commitment" version of history. Who can argue that Old Eleazar didn't have the Indians' best interests in mind? Just think of the words to that old tune: "a Bible and a drum, And five hundred gallons of New England rum."
