An Aegis off of Long Island and Newport News would pretty much protect all of the Eastern seaboard from Atlanta to Boston from short- and medium-range nuclear attack. However -- who's going to launch a short- or medium-range nuclear attack on New York City? The Canadians? The dictates of geography mean it would, by necessity, be a long-range attack. Far better to deploy the Aegis defense in hotspots around the world: the Sea of Japan, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, the Bay of Bengal...
