Friday, November 08, 2002Let's Bomb BaghdadThe UN Security Council has approved unanimously the new resolution on Iraq. Even Syria voted with us.However, the determination of noncompliance will now be made by the weapons inspectors, rather than the US or the Security Council. This isn't great. Although we have every reason to believe that Iraq will not do what it is told to do, the inspectors won't exactly be forthcoming. Knowing, as they will, that a complaint will mean the start of a war, and knowing that they are generally pretty dovish, they'll give Saddam more of the benefit of the doubt than he deserves. Fortunately, though, the resolution requires the inspectors to report on compliance within 60 days of beginning their task. Also, Saddam must respond in 7 days on whether or not he will recognize this resolution -- which he might not do. Then the planes would take off. So, in celebration, I offer this.
